Job Description

Hematopathology Lab Operations Manager -

Hematopathology Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing the departmental activity of a growing Hematopathology laboratory. This position is responsible for ensuring the department is performing at the level it should be, meeting all goals, and the quality of results being reported are at the appropriate level meeting all necessary Quality Control (QC) guidelines. The manager works with lab personnel and support staff to ensure optimal performance of the team. They work with upper management to ensure all policies and procedures are carried out, and that their unit meets all necessary regulatory guidelines.

Manages the supervision and oversight for routine Flow Cytometry, Molecular, Cytogenetics, FISH and Histology, Grossing and Accessioning functions for a multi-shift workforce.
Oversees daily routine laboratory operations on all shifts.
Maintains quality control standards within CAP, CLIA, and NYS guidelines.
Performs personnel training, performance reviews, and coaching.
Maintains established performance and production standards; proposes continual process improvement for efficiency and quality.
Responsible for turnaround time reporting.
Responsible for overall laboratory safety.
Oversees equipment maintenance.
Maintains responsibility for providing departmental supervision of high complexity test performance by employees.
Assures that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
Evaluates the process for determining the competency of testing personnel and assures that the employees maintain their competency to perform procedures. The procedures for evaluation of the competency of the employees must include, but are not limited to:
Direct observations of routine patient test performance, including specimen handling, and processing.
Review of quality control records, proficiency testing results, and preventative maintenance records;
Direct observation of performance of instrument maintenance and function checks;
Assessment of problem solving skills.
Ensures all Quality Assurance (QA)/Quality Inspection (QI)/Quality Control (QC) to ensure laboratory standards and regulations are maintained.
Oversees with the selection, training, mentoring, and performance evaluation of lab team.
Resolves employee relations issues and recommends disciplinary action when required. Initiates disciplinary action when control results exceed defined acceptance limits.
Acts as final point of contact on technical, procedural, and policy questions. Keeps team informed of new processes and general updates.

Bachelor’s degree in a biological science.
5 + years supervisory experience.
ASCP certification preferred.
Must possess a general working knowledge of Hematopoietic processes and technologies.
Demonstrated skills in technical data interpretation and ability to troubleshoot.
Demonstrated ability to take and follow direction and to know who the resources are for their direction.
Possess ability to lead high performance technical team.
Knowledge and experience working with diagnostic equipment.
Ability to be motivational and persuasive.
Ability to direct others as well as take direction from others.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, Outlook, and general working knowledge of Internet for business use.
Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced, high-stress, deadline driven environment.
Visual acuity (including color discrimination) and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail.
Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment and perform sterile techniques as required.
Must possess ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
Must possess ability to perform repetitive motion.
Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
May be exposed to hazardous waste including stain waste (i.e., Beta mercaptoeethanol etc.) aromatic hydrocarbons (xylene), and other combustible organics (i.e., ethyl alcohol and isopropanol).
May be required to handle blood-borne pathogens and general laboratory reagents.
