Job Description

Job Title: Molecular Medical Technologist II-III
Reports To: Laboratory Director

Job Summary:
Responsible for performing technical and scientific processes and procedures in a high complexity genetic testing clinical laboratory. This position involves sequencing analysis applied to molecular technology and will require the technologist to master multiple software systems for instruments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
● Performs routine high-complexity testing in molecular and microbiology, quality control, calibration, maintenance and proficiency testing in accordance with current laboratory procedures.
● Follow procedures related to patient testing including but not limited to:
○ Receive and record delivery of patient samples.
○ Prepare specimens for the downstream processes performed in other areas of the lab.
○ Perform manual and automated molecular biology protocols
○ Review results, QC and sign off on wet lab results.
○ Informs senior personnel of any problem or issue that affects the reporting of patient results.
○ Documents any problems, issues or information that may be necessary for other testing personnel to be aware.
● Instruments and equipments:
○ Assists with coordination of routine laboratory tasks including ordering of supplies, restocking shelves, and data entry and laboratory inventory.
○ Assists with the maintenance of laboratory equipment, including the sequencers, instruments, and the generator.
○ Assists with ensuring that the laboratory facility and equipment remain in good working order.
● QA/QC:
○ Work in a CAP/CLIA Laboratory environment and follow regulatory guidelines.
○ Assists with testing, implementation, and validation of new procedures and instrumentation.
○ Documents any problems, issues or information that may be necessary for other testing personnel to be aware.
○ Take corrective action if Quality Control results are not within acceptable limits. Document all corrective actions taken as indicated in established laboratory procedures.
● Identifies opportunities for quality and workflow improvements and brings ideas to senior staff.
● Performs logistical support for sample shipping to other locales.
● Training and competency assessment of testing personnel as needed.
● Maintain a clean, neat, and orderly work area.
● Communicates effectively and fosters teamwork and mutual respect.
● Adhere to Department Specific Safety Guidelines.

Skills and Qualification Requirements:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. ● PCR and qPCR.
● Next-generation sequencing library preparation and instrument runs.
● Operation of liquid handling systems.
● Capillary electrophoresis: Sanger sequencing and fragment analysis.
● Integrated laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
● Attention to detail
● Computer skills: Google Suite, Microsoft Office, etc.
Education and Experience Requirements:
● Bachelor of Science in biological sciences or related field is required; no exceptions can be made.
● Experience working in a molecular or CLIA/CAP laboratory is preferred.
● Experience with the operation of liquid handling system is preferred.
● Experience with integrated laboratory information management systems (LIMS) is preferred.
● ASCP certification (Molecular Biology) is a bonus, but not a requirement.
● Experience in genomic workflows (e.g., exomes, genomes, NGS instrumentation) is a plus.
● Clinical experience preferred
