Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION
Perform and direct procedures and functions within the Molecular Genetics department. Provides direct supervision of Molecular Technologists and the testing they perform. Maintains departmental QA/QC and inspection readiness.
RESPONSIBILITIES

Day to day supervision of test performance and testing personnel.
Monitoring examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are

maintained.

Assure that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the

laboratory's established performance specifications.

In the event of non-conformances, ensures that results of tests examinations are not reported

until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning.

Lead direct reports by delegating clear responsibility, accountability and authority to meet

mutually agreed upon expectations.

Accountable for accreditation readiness.

• Maintain inspection readiness.
• Ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, and NY State regulations.

Coordinate staffing needs, training, evaluation and competency of employees.

• Interview and screen applications for departmental positions.
• Coordinates training and competency assessments for new employees.
• Provide employee counsel and annually evaluate and document the performance of
all department personnel.
• Schedule employees for departmental coverage, ensuring appropriate staffing levels to
optimally perform laboratory volume of testing in accordance with laboratory mission
and regulatory agencies.
• Ensure departmental employees are well groomed and adhering to dress code.
• Ensure departmental employees are complying with company policies.
• Ensure departmental employees exercise courtesy and proper conduct towards patients,
visitors and laboratory personnel.

Adhere to QC and maintenance procedures established in the department.

• Utilize recommended QC material for testing.
• Perform and record all QC established by department.
• Perform function checks, calibration and maintenance of equipment as required and
trouble shoot instrumentation.
• Implement new QC procedures in compliance with implementation of new testing.
• Make corrective changes of existing QC.
• Establish corrective action for non-complying QC.
• Coordinate and ensure completeness of QC.
• Monitor statistical data.

Maintain optimal cost effectiveness, delivery of testing with accuracy, validity and

reliability.
• Monitors cost effective procedures and methods.
• Cost effective use of materials, scheduling of employees and selection of equipment.
• Assists in the development of departmental budgets and business plans; manages to
them.

Evaluate new instruments, methods and procedures to keep the department updated.

• Assist R&D with validations and verifications, writing of SOP's and transitioning new
tests into production.
• Coordinate reviews, updates and writing of SOP's.
• Arrange for installation of instruments and equipment; ensure appropriate
environmental conditions.

Prepare and label chemical and biological reagents and material according to prescribed

directions observing constraints of reactivity, precision, accuracy and safety precautions.
• Notify Director of Operations of new hazardous materials in department.
• Prepare reagents as needed, properly label date of preparation, storage requirements
and date of expiration.
• Train department personnel in storage and use of hazardous materials.

Maintain department and monitor supply levels.

• Maintain department in a clean and orderly manner.
• Anticipate and maintain department supply needs.
• Perform monthly inventory.

Adhere to all safety regulations and insure departmental compliance.
Perform patient testing when necessary to complete departmental workload.
Minimum of forty hours/week.
Overtime, weekend, and holiday work may be necessary to fulfill duties.
Acts in accordance with established procedures and good judgment in the event of an emergency or disaster.
Computer Requirements – must understand the overall department specific database.

Requirements:
· Bachelor's degree in a laboratory science.
· Master's Degree in a laboratory science preferred.
· MB(ASCP), CLSp(MB), or MT(ASCP) certification.
· Must have a broad knowledge of molecular diagnostics testing, instrumentation and platforms.· · Must have a strong working knowledge of CLIA regulations, CAP
· Must have excellent written and oral communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
· Ability to make sound decisions based on reason and facts with freedom from error.
