Job Description

We are seeking a highly-motivated Research Scientist, Applied Statistical Genetics to join our team within the Genomics and Data Science (GDS) group. This position will provide support and leadership to our company vision to perform large-scale target discovery using African genomic datasets.
The GDS team is responsible for implementing workflows to analyze sequence and array datasets and for performing target discovery analyses across rare and common diseases. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical and programming skills with experience in the analysis of genomic data, such as array, whole-exome and/or whole-genome data. A strong interest in biology and biological pathways. The position requires excellent communication skills, relaying key findings to the GDS team, the Discovery team, and to broader our leadership.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
● Knowledge and experience in the use of open-source bioinformatics software and pipelines to support diverse bioinformatics analyses such as WGS, exome sequencing, genotyping arrays.
● Proficiency in statistical genetics software packages (such as gene annotation programs, Plink, Regenie).
● Experience in various biological and pathway databases to help annotate and better understand emerging candidate loci.
● Proficient in R, strong proficiency in a programming language (e.g. Perl/Python/C/Java), and a high degree of comfort in *NIX environments.
● Experience with Git and workflow languages (Snakemake, Nextflow, CWL, etc.)
● Experience working in cloud (e.g. AWS) or HPC environments.
● Familiarity with genome databases (particularly those relating to genome
annotation, variant annotation, and pathways), in biological and pathway databases to help annotate and better understand emerging candidate targets, and
in the method for refinement of GWAS signals.
● Exhibit strong analytical skills. Demonstrate the ability to multi-task and lead
simultaneous projects to get results with strong attention to detail
Essential Functions
● Manage relationships and projects involving academic and industry partners across Africa.
● Perform “deep dives” into loci that emerge from our GWAS pipelines and build a case for experimental follow up.
● Assist in the preparation of scientific presentations, manuscripts, and reports.
● Demonstrate the ability to interpret and communicate analytical information in a
clear, concise manner.
● Desire to work and problem solve in a highly collaborative team environment.
● Have excellent written and verbal communication, an ability to translate complex,
domain-specific information for non-specialists.
