Job Description

Our client, a growing global pharmaceutical company and a great team of people, seeks qualified candidates for a full-time position in their Manufacturing department located in Research Triangle Park, NC. The Director, Project Management leads the project management function within the company's Manufacturing organization and is responsible for overall strategic planning and the development, oversight and effective use of project timelines, budgets and resource plans for the department’s product development and manufacturing projects. The Director, Project Management plays a key role in assessing and mitigating project risks and communicating project execution and department performance to management.

Primary Responsibilities

• Lead strategic planning for the Manufacturing department, ensuring department goals are aligned with corporate objectives and translated into project-level priorities and objectives.

• Work closely with functional leaders to develop and effectively use project timelines, budgets and resource plans. Monitor project progress, track key deliverables and project milestones. Organize periodic project review meetings.

• With project leaders, identify project risks and prepare mitigation and contingency plans. Identify upside potential and opportunities to accelerate timelines.

• Prepare project updates for management review meetings and clearly communicate status.

• Partner and work cooperatively with other internal stakeholders in Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory, R&D and Clinical. Work across functions to develop high-level and detailed integrated project plans; ensure resourcing and priorities are in alignment with broader corporate goals, initiatives and timelines.

• Provide project management support to key department projects, including external CROs/CMOs (project plans, meeting coordination, action tracking, etc.).

• Develop and track metrics to enhance team and department performance and communicate to management.

• Oversee annual department budget-setting process, monthly financial reviews and quarterly budget forecasts. Identify and pursue cost reduction opportunities for the department.

• Ensure adequate support of day-to-day financial transactions (purchase orders, invoices, accruals) is provided for the department.

• Develop and implement systems, processes and procedures to facilitate the efficient operation of a growing department. Bring a continuous improvement mindset, identify and implement improvements to current department processes and tools.

• Supervise and develop project management staff.

Qualification Requirements:

Education & Experience


• BS degree in technical field required. MBA or advanced degree a plus

• Minimum 15 years in the pharmaceutical industry with at least 5 years of previous management experience leading a project management, strategic planning, or similar function

• Previous experience developing and managing project and/or department budgets required.

• Prior commercial product launch experience preferred. Experience with ophthalmic products a plus.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office and MS Project; experience using SAP or similar ERP system; Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred


Skills/Knowledge Required

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Comfortable interacting with senior management.

• Excellent leadership and organizational skills. Strong analytical, strategic thinking and troubleshooting skills

• Strong understanding of CMC development and manufacturing activities (clinical through commercial manufacturing)

• Good working knowledge of current US and European pharmaceutical regulatory/compliance requirements

• Sound understanding of project financials; ability to develop project and department budgets, track spending and forecast future spending for a complex development and manufacturing programs

• Demonstrated experience leading a high performing team

• Strong situational leadership and influencing skills (e.g. teambuilding, facilitation, conflict resolution, persuasion, negotiation)

• Demonstrated strategic thinking, improvement skills, and familiarity with tools and techniques, e.g., decision analysis, business process improvement, Lean/Six Sigma concepts
