Job Description

Odyssey House provides comprehensive and innovative services to residents of New York who suffer from mental illness and abuse drugs and alcohol. We provide high quality, holistic treatment supporting personal rehabilitation, renewal, and family restoration.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS:
The Nursing Supervisor participates as an active member of the clinical management team, providing oversight of all Odyssey House Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Medical Assistants and Pharmacy Technicians including staff supervision, staff training and quality assurance activities which ensure compliance with internal and regulatory standards related to coordination of resident healthcare services, resident education and access to medication. When needed, the Nursing Supervisor may be required to provide direct services to program residents.


SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Supervises RNs, LPNs and Medical Assistants who are responsible for resident assessment, education, triage and coordination of medical services with contracted on-site medical providers and with community based healthcare services.
2. Trains all Odyssey House RNs, LPNs, Medical Assistants, Pharmacy Technicians, and applicable lay-staff in procedures for overseeing resident access to medication and assesses competency through direct observation.
3. Conducts regularly scheduled quality assurance reviews to ensure that access to medication activities complies with all internal standards and regulatory requirements, including those set forth in the OASAS LSB 2012-04, the OMH 595 regulations and the NYS DOH requirements for institutional dispensers of controlled substances.
4. Assures proper storage, access, record keeping and destruction of all controlled and non-controlled medications.
5. Develops, implements and monitors facility systems that ensure that medication orders are transmitted in a timely manner to the pharmacy and that all medication deliveries are reconciled, over the counter medication access complies with standing orders, and that medication access is in place during passes and overnight leaves.
6. Develops, implements, and monitors systems which determines resident suitability for self administration without oversight and assures accurate recording of capacity testing for self administration without oversight in the clinical record.
7. Ensures that subordinate staff communicates with facility clinical staff all resident non-adherence to prescribed medication regiment.
8. Supervise the maintenance of adequate and up-to-date records on all residents, as well as supervise record-keeping responsibilities of staff in accordance with applicable regulatory standards and Odyssey House policies.
9. When needed, conducts review of new applicant documentation to determine medical appropriateness for admission.
10. Acts as resident advocate, assuring that all residents’ rights are respected and that all grievances and complaints, associated with department or subordinate staff, are addressed in a timely and equitable manner in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations.
11. Responsible for all personnel actions, including recruitment, hiring, scheduling, evaluation, promotion, disciplinary action and separation of program staff.
12. Provides and implements formal orientation plan to newly hired departmental staff.
13. Monitors compliance with Workplace Safety policy and procedures.
14. Provides direct supervision for designated staff as per Odyssey House policies.
15. Conduct regular clinical and administrative meetings with subordinate staff.
16. Complete all required in-service training seminars.
17. Prepare monthly reports.
18. Other relevant duties as assigned.


REQUIREMENTS: EDUCATION/TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
1. Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited nursing program with two (2) years experience working in sub-acute residential care setting required.
2. Current NYS Registered Professional Nurse required. Nurse Practitioners welcome
3. In good standing with New York State Department of Education Professional Licensing Board and without any outstanding malpractice judgments.
4. Experience delivering supervision, staff training and conducting quality assurance activities preferred.
5. Proficiency with computer operation (Microsoft Word, Excel, Electronic Health Records, and Outlook programs).
6. Must be able to work a flexible schedule including weekends and evening when needed.
7. This position will require regular local travel as well as on-call responsibilities.
