Job Description
Are you a sharp, capable family lawyer who is tired of being underused, over-supervised, or stuck pushing paper? We are a busy, growing family law practice looking for someone who wants challenge, responsibility, and a role with real legal depth.
You will be stepping into a practice with existing files, strong systems, excellent law clerk support, and a fully electronic workflow, so you can focus on the legal work and client relationships that actually matter.
We are also a small, cohesive team. We value good judgment, strong writing, professionalism, empathy, prompt client service, and the kind of work ethic that keeps files moving without drama.
What This Role Actually Looks Like
You will handle substantive family law work from day one. That means drafting persuasive court materials, reviewing and organizing financial disclosure, preparing for and attending at conferences, motions, mediations, and other appearances, and helping move cases forward in a thoughtful, strategic way.
You will speak with clients regularly and be trusted to think, write, and advocate. We are here to support you, but we are not looking for someone who needs to be micromanaged on every step.
If you already have solid experience with financial statement and net family property work, motion drafting, court attendance, and mediation preparation, you will hit the ground running. If you are a strong junior with real family law exposure, excellent writing skills, and the right attitude, we are interested in hearing from you.
The Work Itself
• Handle files from intake through resolution with supervision that respects your experience.
• Draft strong court materials, including pleadings, affidavits, motions, conference briefs and settlement proposals.
• Manage and review disclosure, including complex financials, and prepare financial statements and net family property materials.
• Conduct legal research, use judgment, and help formulate practical winning strategies.
• Communicate clearly and promptly with clients so they understand where their case stands and what comes next.
• Attend court, mediations, arbitrations, and other necessary appearances.
• Work closely with experienced law clerks who handle service, scheduling, logistics, and filing.
• Contribute to a team culture built on camaraderie, accountability, and high-quality client service.
You Might Be a Fit If You
• Have solid Ontario family law experience. Three or more years is ideal, but we are open to strong candidates with less if they have real family law exposure and can write well.
• Know your way around the Family Law Rules, the Divorce Act, the Family Law Act, and related family law legislation.
• Can draft clear, well-organized, and persuasive materials.
• Are comfortable with court appearances or are on a clear path to becoming comfortable quickly.
• Can prepare or meaningfully assist with financial statement and net family property work.
• Are organized, proactive, responsive, and not afraid to make judgment calls.
• Value professionalism, empathy, procedural fairness, and prompt client service.
• Want mentorship, but also want the autonomy to grow into a central role.
Work Format
Our practice is fully electronic and cloud-based. The role offers flexibility, but it is not purely remote work. You must be able to attend necessary in-person court appearances, client meetings, and other attendances in Ottawa and surrounding areas.
What We Offer
• Competitive compensation based on experience, responsibility, and contribution
• Extended health benefits.
• LSO and LawPRO coverage.
• Extensive CPD support. We take learning seriously and want people who are committed to getting better.
• Flexible work arrangements within a practice that is already built for electronic work.
• Interesting work that actually matters.
• An environment where your work is seen, valued, and trusted.
A Word from Me (Your Future Boss)
I am looking for a lawyer I can trust to think things through and get things done. You do not need to know everything. You do need to be smart, reliable, hardworking, and eager to improve. If you want to own your work, build real skill quickly, and help clients through some of the toughest moments of their lives with professionalism and clarity, this is a great place to do it.
If You Are Interested
Please send the following:
• A short cover letter telling me about your background and what you are looking for.
• Your CV.
• Optional: a redacted writing sample in family law.
• References are welcome.
