Job Description

Position Summary:
• This procedure describes the basic functions, reporting relationships, authority, and responsibilities of the Welder I at S&P USA.
• The Job Description provides the performance criteria for the position. It also states the Job Requirements as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
• The person occupying the position of Welder I is responsible for setting up and operating MIG and TIG welding machines to weld galvanized and aluminum metal parts according to work order, blueprints, layout, and operating charts. The Welder I uses fixtures to assist in welding, and has little or no free-handed welding abilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Positions welding torch at a specified angle and distance from work piece.
• Selects tip and filler wire according to charts or thickness and type of metal.
• Places reel of filler wire onto spindle and threads end through feed rolls to welding seam.
• Connects hoses from torch to regulation valves and cylinders of oxygen and fuel gas.
• Turn regulator valves to start flow of gases, lights torch, and adjusts gas mixture and pressure.
• Starts machine, observes welding action, and examines weld for defects.
• Adjusts machine setup to vary bead size and other weld characteristics.
• May layout, fit, and tack-weld work pieces together.
• May remove surplus slag and splatter using wire brush, portable grinder, and hand scraper.
• Welds flat, cylindrical, or irregular parts that may be clamped, tack-welded or otherwise positioned.
• Turns cranks or pushes buttons to align electrode on welding head over weld joint to weld linear joint, or adjust length of radial arm to position electrode over weld joint when welding radial joints.
• Clamps cylindrical work pieces onto turning rolls under stationary head to weld circular joints.
• Threads specific electrode wire from reel through feed rolls and welding head.
• Turns welding head to set specified angle of electrode.
• Turns knobs to set current, voltage, slop, and synchronize feed of wire with speed of welding action.
• Starts machine and observes meters and gauges, or observes welding action for compliance with procedures.
• Visually examines welds for adherence to specifications.
• May install track template to weld irregularly shaped seams.
• May make trial run before welding and record setup and operating data.
• Observe all company policies and procedures.
• Must be able to work additional hours to support the organization’s needs.
• Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Production Supervisor and/or the Manufacturing Manager.

Educational Requirements:
• High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) or apprenticeship, and at least one (1) year of related experience.
• Certified MIG and TIG welder for galvanized and aluminum metals preferred.
• Forklift certification required; or to be obtained within the initial 90 days of employment.
• Basic computer skills in the Windows environment and Microsoft Office Suite required.
• Ability to read and interpret English documents, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Mental Requirements:
• Ability to communicate in English (read, write and speak) is required as the overwhelming majority of customers, vendors, co-workers, and suppliers communicate in this language.
• Reasoning ability is required to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions, as well as the ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
• Mathematical abilities to accurately measure, add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Physical Requirements:
• The physical demands of the position are listed in accordance with the requirements of the ADA as:
Standing – up to three fourths of the time.
Walking – up to three fourths of the time.
Sitting – up to one fourth of the time.
Talking/Listening – up to three fourths of the time.
Use of hands – up to three fourths of the time.
Climb or Balance – up to one fourth of the time.
Stoop or Kneel – up to one fourth of the time.
Reach with arms – up to one half of the time.
• Body movements, lifting and exerting force – 50 pounds.
• The Senses necessary for the successful performance of this position are:
Hearing – the ability to communicate effectively.
Vision – the ability to record and prepare reports.
• The ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as eye protection, back protection, ear protection, etc. as necessary or required.
• Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
• Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.

Environmental Conditions:
The environmental conditions of the area in which the person shall perform his/her duties consist of ambient temperature variations, dust, fumes, and elevated noise levels found in a manufacturing environment in this geographical area.
